A 19-year-old labourer reportedly busted with an illegal gun and ammunition was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Timothy Taylor, of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to respond to charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
According to the Police, on January 6, last, Taylor, who was unlicenced, was busted with a .32 revolver with three live rounds of matching ammunition at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown. He pleaded not guilty and submitted an application for bail.
According to Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, about 02:45 hours, a party of police ranks on patrol duty observed Taylor and two others acting in a suspicious manner. He said they decided to approach the defendant and his friends, but when they observed the cops advancing they ran away.
Jones told the court that the ranks chased after them, but were only able to apprehend Taylor.
The defendant was searched and the loaded gun was found hidden in the waist of his pants. He was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station where charges were subsequently laid.
Jones, who objected to bail, said that Taylor was a flight risk and had raised no special reasons for bail. He said too that the 19-year-old had given the court a different address from the Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown address he had initially given to the police.
The Magistrate granted the prosecution’s request and Taylor was ordered held. The matter will be called again on January 23.
