After being crowned champions of the inaugural Stag Super XVI knockout football challenge, Grove Hi-Tech yesterday received the top prize of $1.5M and trophy at a presentation ceremony held at Ansa Mc Al head office, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara.
Grove Hi Tech of the East Bank Football Association hammered Ann’s Grove of the East Demerara Football Association 5-0 in the final on January 1 at # 5 ground, West Coast Berbice. Ann’s Grove received a trophy and $500,000.
New Amsterdam United (NAU) thumped Cougars 5-1 in the third place encounter and they pocketed a trophy and $300,000 while Cougars took home a trophy and $100,000. Grove Hi Tech forward Domini Garnett who netted all five goals in the final and Adrian Adams of NA United collected a trophy and $25,000 each for being the tournament’s leading goal scorers with nine apiece. Garnett was also voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and was rewarded with another cheque for $25,000 and trophy.
Another Grove player, Rondell Allen grabbed the best goalkeeper award (a trophy and $25,000). Allen had an outstanding during the tournament only conceding two goals.
Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director of Ansa McAl, Ms. Beverley Harper said they are delighted to be associated with the competition. “We are happy to be the only sponsor and I would like to thank the associations for the opportunity,” she added.
Harper congratulated the winners and expressed gratitude to the participating sides, fans and Stag Beer team adding that the tournament was well organized. She also lauded the media for the coverage provided.
General Secretary of the East Bank Football Association Franklin Wilson thanked the sponsor for their commitment and partnership. He complimented the teams for their efforts stating that the tournament was highly competitive.
Captain of Grove Hi-Tech Sherman Doris expressed delight for winning the competition. He said it was a total team effort and spoke highly of the coaching staff. Six teams from East Demerara FA and five each from Berbice FA and East Bank FA competed in the tournament. Daddy’s Enterprise, Sky Construction and Talbot Construction assisted with the individual trophies.
