Around 7:30hrs on Wednesday, greens vendor, Hemraj Singh, 54, of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara and his wife, Padmini Singh, 54, were on their way into the Polder, to purchase greens when their path was blocked by a Premio motor car PSS 8296 (the number was obscured at the time).
At the time they were travelling in motor Canter GMM 8868 along the Black Bush Polder Access Road, Adventure, Corentyne.
The car had five occupants; one was a woman. As the Canter came to a screeching halt two men armed with shotguns emerged and held them up.
The thieves robbed the couple of $180,000 and a cell phone before re-entering the car and speeding away in the Upper Corentyne direction.
The police were informed and responded promptly. Roadblocks were mounted along the Corentyne highway and the vehicle was spotted periodically.
However the perpetrators kept dodging in and out of various villages.
The police persistence led to them spotting the car along the Scottsburg Public road where it was subsequently intercepted more than 25 miles away and about a half an hour later. At the time two occupants were in the vehicle, including the female.
A man who was the driver of a car that was intercepted a few weeks ago with two ex soldiers and an interdicted policeman, was indentified among the five robbers. However he managed to elude the police during the chase. The man was spotted later, but escaped again in some bushes.
The two persons have been placed in custody and the car has been impounded as investigations continue.
