Good Success SC were crowned champions of the Badri Prasad Memorial T20 competition after their opponents Sans Souci SC refused to continue the final which was contested on Sunday last at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground.
The controversy came after Sans Souci’s Seon Venture was given out with the score on 60-7 in 13.5 overs, chasing 89 from a reduced 15-over contest; Venture teammates disagreed with the umpire’s decision.
Sans Souci decision to insert their opponents paid dividends – pacer Venture sent back the dangerous Imran Khan for 16 (2×6) and Charles Benjamin (06), while off-spinner Gurnauth had Chandrika Ragnauth caught for nine before Oyono Sampson accounted for Shoaib Namaz (02), reducing Good Success to 47-4. However Lokram Narine and Nazeer Mohamed steadied the innings with a fifth wicket stand of 39. While Mohamed (02) was content to play the supporting role, Narine took the fight to the bowlers; he clobbered four sixes in a top score of 30. Following their separation, Sans Souci picked up wickets at regular intervals with Sampson doing most of the damage with 3-10 from three overs. Venture captured 2-12 from three while Khemraj and Wayne Osborne had one each.
Medium pacer Ragnauth uprooted the stumps of Khemraj (00) and Narine bowled Osborne (06) as Sans Souci made a shaky start. Off-spinner Vickram Ramnarine then removed Tulsieram Ramadeen (05) and Sampson (01) before Heera Sukram (08) was run out leaving the score at 24-5.
Venture and Roopnarine Persaud attempted to repair the damage with a sixth wicket stand of 19 before Persaud was run out for 11. But Venture and Narine (05*) kept their team in the hunt with a seven wicket stand of 19 before Venture’s dismissal ended the match abruptly. Ramnarine was the most successful bowler with 2-10 off two overs, while Ragnauth and man-of-the-match Narine took one each.
Mohamed collected the best bowler award with nine wickets and Ryan Adams of Zeelandia (136) took the best batsman prize. Both teams received trophies.
Speaking on behalf of the sponsors, Satrohan Prasad congratulated the teams and said he admired the way the game was played until the controversy. Secretary of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee Nazeer Mohamed thanked the sponsors.
The competition was played in memory of the late Badri Prasad, a former businessman on the island and was sponsored by Oudit Prasad.
