Four players with ODI experience included
By Sean Devers
The Guyana Jaguars 14-man squad for the 2015 NAGICO Super50 in Trinidad and Tobago was named yesterday and as widely expected DCC seam bowling all-rounder Chris Barnwell has retained his position of One-Day Captain.
Former 50-over Skipper Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul from Albion is Barnwell’s deputy in a side that is missing several of their senior players from last year due to various reasons.
Two competitions runs from January 15-25 and the Jaguars, playing in Zone ‘B’, come up against Windward Islands Volcanoes (Jan 15), Barbados Pride (Jan 17) and CCC (Jan 19) in their three preliminary round games in three Day/Night matches which commence at 13:30hrs at the Queens Park Oval.
Guyana will field a depleted side since Narsingh Deonarine and Leon Johnson are unavailable because of their West Indies 50-over commitments in South Africa, Assad Fudadin is out with a broken finger sustained during a fielding drill in South Africa, Test batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, who played in last year’s tournament was not selected by the Jaguars, while the West Indies under-19 pair of Shemron Hetmyer and Taignarine Chanderpaul were not considered since are a part of the West Indies under-19 side which will compete in Zone ‘B’ of the NAGICO tournament.
Four players in the side have ODI experience while the Jaguars’ Four-Day Captain Vishaul Singh is also included in the One-Day unit. Forty-year-old Everest left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul, with 12 tons in his 398 List ‘A’ matches is the most experienced player in the entire tournament and one of three Test players in the Jaguars team. The other players with Test experience are Albion spin twins Devendra Bishoo and Permaul, while Rose Hall Town’s 31-year old batsman Royston Crandon played his only ODI game in South Africa.
The 27-year-old Barnwell, who played six t20 Internationals for the West Indies is the only other player in the side with Windies senior team experience although Essequibo pacer Ronsford Beaton who represents city club GCC, has played in the West Indies ‘A’ team.
The solid but often times slow scoring Chanderpaul, who is no longer considered for ODI cricket, could be used as Opener and the others bat around him, especially since four senior batsmen are missing from the line-up.
At 23, Trevon Griffith, the attacking DCC left-hander, gets another chance to get a big score at the Regional level, while Rajendra Chandrika has looked enterprising in the Four-Day format and could play a key role at the top of the order for the Jaguars. Anthony Bramble, who could also open the batting if required, is the Wicketkeeper, while Jonathon Foo seems to have matured tremendously since struggling against the short ball for Guyana in South Africa and has also been selected.
Barbadian left-arm seam bowling all-rounder Raymond Reifer, Barnwell and swing bowler Paul Wintz are support staff for the genuinely quick Beaton, while Steven Jacobs, who led the CCC last year, is a batting all-rounder and could provide spin support to Bishoo and Permaul.
The Jaguars will play two practice matches tomorrow and Friday before they wing out for Trinidad on January 13.
Guyana Jaguars squad: Christopher Barnwell (captain), Veerasammy Permaul (v-captain), Rajendra Chandrika, Trevon Griffith, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Vishaul Singh, Raymon Reifer, Anthony Bramble, Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton, Paul Wintz, Steven Jacobs, Royston Crandon, Jonathan Foo.
Coach: Esuan Crandon, Assistant Coach: Rayon Griffith.
