Guyanese distance athletes dominated the twelfth edition of the Bigi Broki Waka 10km and 5km races over the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge Sunday morning, digging deep to turn in some credible performances in the tough terrain owed to the rain.
Cleveland Forde won the 10km race in 34:15 ahead of countryman, Cleveland Thomas, who was second and Surinamese athlete Steven Vismale, who finished third. Forde’s relatively slow time, which was two minutes off his usual pace, was reflective of the difficult course.
Guyana was on podium again when Lionel D’Andrade stormed to victory in the 5km race with a time of 17:07 ahead of Surinamese athletes, Aloeboetoe Gilberto (17:24), and Vorswijk Rochini (17:39) respectively. D’Andrade told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the course was challenging to navigate despite his emphatic 17-second victory.
In the female race, Guyanese Alika Morgan dominated the 10km event in 41:45 with Guyanese compatriot, Andrea Foster finishing second. Suriname’s Caroline Marlet finished third.
Kaieteur Sport understands that despite the rain, the athletes completed their respective races without significant incidents. VIDEO, the Foundation that organised the event, aims to raise awareness for the whole year with healthy exercise.
This year’s Bigi Broki Waka started at 7:15am with 5,500 people in total participating in the walk/jog, 5km and 10km activities in the increasingly popular event despite constant rain. In recent years the rain started following the event.
