…Relatives accuse police of refusing to take action
What was first through of as a motorcycle accident that led to the death of Vickram Sohan called ‘Robby’, 20; a cane cutter of Betsy Ground, East Canje Berbice is now turning out to be more than that.
According to his mother, Jaiwantie Singh, called ‘Lay, Lay’ of Betsy Ground, Sohan was found in an unconscious state in a clump of bushes at New Forest, East Canje Berbice on September 14, last with motorcycle CD 5091 on top of him.
He was picked up by relatives and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital the following day. He was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital on October 15. He returned to the New Amsterdam Hospital after the doctors had given up on him. His relatives took him to the Woodlands Hospital on October 16. He died there on October 21, 2014.
The post mortem examination revealed that he died from massive head injuries, a fractured spine and bronchopneumonia. His chest and armpits were red and swollen.
The entire scenario was a mystery to relatives since some of his injuries were not consistent with a motor cycle accident. They wondered how he got all of those injuries and the motor cycle had little damage. The motor cycle was on top of him, the helmet was smashed in and his foot was almost burnt to the bone from the exhaust of the bike.
The mystery was unfolded five days after Sohan was buried, when an eye witness came forward and told the family that Sohan’s death was not due to an accident, that he was murdered. The culprits were some of Sohan good friends with whom he used to hang out. The relatives concluded that he was murdered because his killer’s wife was previously friendly with an overseas-based Guyanese who got annoyed because the woman was now in love with Sohan.
The eyewitness, Lakeram Pooran, called ‘Rice’, 17, said that he was collected by the overseas-based Guyanese ‘Vickram’, ‘Labba’ ‘Buddo’ and ‘Kittle Boy’.
Pooran stated that he, Sohan, and the four men were close friends. He said that he was not told where they were going, but on their way to New Forest he noticed Sohan riding in the opposite direction.
He said that as the car was about to pass Sohan, ‘Labba’ took a wood and struck Sohan behind his head. Sohan wobbled and rode for a distance. The men turned the car around, came out and went to Sohan. They took their shirts and blocked the car windows, so he could only see through the back windscreen.
They parked the car by a sluice and started to beat Sohan who fought back. The now dead Sohan reportedly cuff ‘Buddo’ in his eye, flooring him. The men then held on to Sohan and Labba struck him across his chest.
‘Buddo’ then struck him a couple of times across his head. He said that ‘Kittle Boy’ and ‘Buddo’ then pulled him to where the motor cycle was and ‘Kittle Boy’, ‘Buddo’ and ‘Labba’ then lifted the bike and placed it on top of Sohan.
All the time ‘Vickram’ was folding his arm and laughing and the men were saying “you wife gon suck a good wood.”
The men then returned to the car placed a knife at his throat telling him to put his tongue under his teeth. The car then drove away.
He said he was actually held hostage for the rest of the time. He was collected in the morning and held by the men. They threatened him that if he talked they would cut his throat or shoot him.
He said that he did not participate in whatever took place he decided to talk after ‘Vickram’ left and went away. He went to Aunty ‘Lay, Lay’ and told her what went on.
He also gave a statement to the police.
The family is upset that with all the information in the public domain and an eyewitness account, no one has been charged as yet. The family stated that they did not inform the police earlier, because Sohan hadn’t a licence and they were afraid that he would have been charged.
On the day he was found on the road, he actually collected the bike from where his father had left it and rode away.
The men were picked up and held for a brief period and released.
The family wants justice and is calling on all the relevant authorities, including the Minister of Home Affairs and the President to do something to help them.
They have since sought the services of a lawyer and are prepared to go to the full length to get justice.
