…resources permit continued search efforts
Today makes the ninth day since the Air Services Limited (ASL) Britten Norman Islander went missing with 27-year-old Captain Nicky Persaud and 51-year-old cargo handler David Bisnauth. Again, search and rescue workers are nowhere close to locating the missing craft.
Yesterday saw another day of fruitless searching for the missing cargo plane that was shuttling construction supplies from Mahdia to Karisparu in the Region Eight Potaro-Siparuni location. Two Sundays ago contact was lost with the twin engine aircraft minutes after it left Mahdia.
Despite its location devices which are determined to be non-operational by now, rescuers were unable to locate the craft in the early period. Expectations are not high about the men’s chances of survival are reducing since the 72-hour critical period has expired.
Searches are being conducted in the densely forested, mountainous region.
Recently, ground troops were organized. Twenty-four persons are said to be in teams of four searching ground areas of interest. Yesterday, some searchers went to a particular area, but the results were disappointing as that search turned up empty.
Yesterday’s weather was fairly good, Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Director General Zulphicar Mohamed said. Unlike Saturday, this caused rescuers to lose a half day worth of search time because of inclement weather. Apart from the weather, the terrain has been extremely challenging.
The ongoing efforts are being managed by the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) located at the Timehri Tower at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
The body is made up of several agency arms including the Guyana Defence Force, the ASL team and GCAA among others. Currently, a plan is being plotted for ground troops.
The RCC told the media during a press briefing last week that search efforts will continue until resources permit. Mohamed told the newspaper yesterday that resources are still available and pertinent equipment is still involved in rescue efforts.
Aerial searches and ground work continue today.
