The Guyana Human Development Centre (GDHC) at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice was the location of a very big celebration last Friday. Forty-eight students graduated from the Jesuit-run facility in various
practical, academic and technical fields.
They earned diplomas and certificates in Computer- basics and advanced, nail care, cooking, cake making, sewing and craft.
Attending the event apart from the students, were their parents, special invitees from the Roman Catholic parish of the Ascension in New Amsterdam, Nuns from the Missionaries of Charity, New Amsterdam; Ascension parish priest, Fr. Michael Traher, SFM, parishioners of St. Francis Xavier R.C at Port Mourant; officials from the Catholic Standard, Catholic Magazine and Catholic Media Initiatives including Fr. Justin Prabhu, SJ and Samanthani. Fr. Ramesh Vanan, SJ -the Acting Director of the Centre and Fr. Paul Martin, SJ- the Superior of the Jesuits in Guyana.
The chief guest at the graduation ceremony was Ms. Roxan Jagnarain, a cosmetologist from Berbice.
According to Fr. Ramesh Vanan, the Jesuits in Guyana run this Centre. “It was established to be able to reach out to the entire neighborhood with the aim of building up human communities where peace, joy and love exists, to promote inter-religious dialogue and to help educate Guyanese of all ages and race to develop skills which would enable them to make a life for themselves,” he said.
Fr. Vanan urged the graduates not to be best in the world because, “It would be based on speed, competition or trends.” But he encouraged them to be best for the world. If they strived to be best for the world then their growth will be challenging, meaningful, fulfilling and most importantly, lifelong.
Mrs. Jagnarine said that life is full of challenges and one has to keep trying hard without giving up. She asked the graduates to set a goal and to pursue it. She also encouraged them not to let the fear of failure prevent them from doing what they dream to be.
Angelita Amar, a member of the teaching staff expressed gratitude to everyone for attending. She related that new classes at the centre begin on January 12, next.
Certificates and tokens of appreciation were then presented to the graduates and a special presentation was made to the guests of honour.
