Mason pulls weapon on shopkeeper to defend smoking – court hears

A 25-year-old mason accused of brandishing a pair of scissors and threatening to stab a businessman, who chastised him for smoking in his shop, appeared in the city court on Friday, last.
Affiba Yankale, of Hadfield Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown was taken before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with threatening behaviour and possession of narcotics.
The police say that on December 31, 2014 at Lot 66 Bent Street, Georgetown, he threatened shop owner, Avinash Salim. The other charge stated that on the same day, he had two grams of cannabis in his possession.
He denied threatening the businessman but admitted that he had the illicit substance.
According to the Prosecutor, Inspector Joel Ricknauth, on the day in question Yankale was in Salim’s shop smoking a cigarette when Salim asked him to quit smoking. Ricknauth said that the defendant retaliated by pulling out a pair of scissors and threatened to bore the shop owner.
The Police, who were on patrol duties in the area, were alerted to the situation and they intervened.
Yankale was apprehended for threatening Salim but while taking him into custody, the ranks decided to conduct a search on him and found two transparent Zip-lock plastic bags in his right side front pants pocket.
Checks revealed that the bags contained leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis. Yankale was taken to the Alberttown Police Station where the suspected drug was weighed in his presence and charges were then instituted against the 25-year-old.
There were no objections to bail made by Prosecutor Ricknauth.
The Magistrate ordered him to post a $3,000 fine for narcotics possession and granted $25,000 bail for the threatening behavior charge.
Coupled with the fine, the Magistrate ordered that Yankale do seven consecutive Saturdays of community service for four hours at the Brickdam Police Station. The community service was set to commence yesterday at 9:00 hours. The trial for the threatening behaviour charge is set to commence on January 7.
