In the spirit of the holidays, the differently-abled in Berbice were recently visited, pampered and showered with gifts by the East Canje Humanitarian Society (ECHS). Twenty-five differently-abled women and children from as far as Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice were presented with hampers by Mrs. Kawalpattie Diaram and the other women from the ECHS, a Non- Governmental Organization aimed at assisting the poor and needy.
Among the items donated were pampers, powder, deodorant, soap, food stuff, towels and clothing. The group was able to purchase the items from fundraisers as well as donations through the past year from both here at home and overseas.
Present at the simple ceremony where the items were displayed, were the other ladies who are a part of the ECHS. The items were bundled and then distributed across Berbice later on.
The ECHS executed numerous projects during 2014, including luncheons for senior citizens; Christmas parties for the less fortunate children; and assistance to fire victims. The gesture towards the differently- abled was the final activity for 2014.
The group is currently celebrating five years of existence. Additionally, the group has donated a quantity of clothing and other items to Health Centres in East Canje, at Cumberland and Goed Bananen Land.
