Describing their experiences as nothing short of disastrous, consumers who opted to have their cargo transported via Champion Xpress Shipping, are now contemplating legal action against the company which they say is responsible for the delay of their consignment.
Champion Xpress Shipping is located at 106-13 Liberty Avenue, Ozone Park, New York and promises efficient packaging and shipping services. The company which was established in 2005 has a local office inside the Guyana Post Office (GPO) building in Georgetown.
A representative of Champion Xpress claimed that the company had some problems to acquire containers to ship.
“We had some problems with the containers…but costumers have to remember that we have to receive word from the boss in New York.”
The woman added that none of the shipped products has arrived in Guyana. She said that she cannot be held responsible since she is only the local agent.
However, yesterday angry consumers who claimed that they were tricked into doing business with the Champion Xpress lashed out at the company over the months of delay for the arrival of their cargo.
Barrington Barlow, a US-based Guyanese, expressed that he was given the royal run around by the shipping company after he utilized the service to send home twelve barrels for the holiday season.
Barlow related that the cargo was shipped via Champion Xpress on October 10 last, but he is yet to receive it.
“I don’t know what to say because these people are not giving me a straight answer… When I shipped with them in October they promised that it would take three to four weeks before my cargo arrives in Guyana but it’s been four months. I’ve been to the office several times and they can’t give me a straight answer whether it is still in New York or if it in Guyana,” the frustrated man lamented.
Barlow said that the “hold up,” took a toll on his family during the holiday season.
“My wife is a diabetic and we shipped some of her dietary supplements in those containers, food stuff and other items because we were spending Christmas in Guyana … My wife and I usually host a party to distribute toys and school items to the children our plans had to be cancelled. The food items will spoil who will repay us for that,” he questioned.
Barlow said that he paid US$800 to have the items shipped.
“They told us its $70 per barrel which is a bit less than the other shipping companies and hence we opted to use the service but now it costing us more. I was here for the entire holiday season and now… I am preparing to return to New York and I still haven’t received any word about my barrels,” Barlow expressed.
Rupert Griffith, another Guyanese based in New York, claimed that he shipped three barrels via Champion Xpress. He claimed that he sent the shipment to his relatives since last September.
The man described his experience with the shipping company as “quite disturbing.”
“They tell us our stuff will get here in a matter of weeks and it has been months and persons can’t uplift their belongings…” he said
When Kaieteur News visited the local office yesterday, a few persons were seen complaining about the lengthy time they have been waiting on the arrival of their shipment.
One woman said that she travelled all the way from Essequibo to get word about her barrels. She said that the delay caused a lot of heartache and disappointment.
“I was calling them all de time and up to now I can’t know anything about my barrels … I came down to town because I post stuff for a wedding, baby clothes, Christmas items in my barrels because they gave me assurance that I would get my stuff in time. I am going to see my lawyer because this situation getting out of` hand,” the woman said.
Other consumers took a website to express their dissatisfaction at the shipping company, warning potential consumers not to utilize the service.
“Do not ship with Champion Xpress. I am still waiting on my stuff that is in Guyana for the past four weeks. Every time you call Debra says yes your stuff is here but we are waiting for word to open the container from the Boss Joel in New York. So it’s over two months now and I am still waiting on my boxes,” one person commented.
