Another roadside accident in the wee hours of New Year’s Day morning, in La Penitence, Cemetery Road, has left two dead and one injured.
Dead is 61 year-old, George Barker of Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown, while the second victim is an unidentified young woman.
The third victim, Brian Devine, is currently receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for injuries sustained in the accident.
This newspaper understands that the driver of the motor car involved in the accident was speeding along Cemetery Road when he lost control of the vehicle after sustaining a punctured tyre.
Eye witnesses in the area said that when the driver reached a speed-bump on the road it lurched onto the roadside, subsequently flinging Barker who was standing with the unidentified female, into a nearby trench.
The 61-year-old, described as an “early papers buyer”, was reportedly waiting to buy the day’s newspaper at a stall situated on the roadside when the car crashed into him. The vehicle then continued on its death trip ploughing into Devine who was reportedly standing further along the road.
Residents recounted that they heard someone shout “Murder!” which alerted many of them to the situation at hand. Public spirited citizens rushed to Barker’s aid, taking him out of the trench and into a taxi to receive treatment at the GPHC.
However, the elderly man was pronounced dead on arrival at the medical institution. Shawn Griffith who assisted in the rescue operation described Barker’s body as feeling “mash up, mash up” as he took it out of the trench.
Meanwhile, as crowds flocked to the aid of Barker and the other victims, witnesses also recounted seeing the driver flee the scene of the accident.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver has been detained by police as investigations continue.
