– postmortem
Despite suggestions that he was kidnapped and murdered, police have unearthed no evidence of foul
play in the death of 14-year-old Dhaniram Ramgopaul, whose body was fished out of a creek on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway last Tuesday.
A police official said that a post mortem performed yesterday by Government pathologist Dr. Nehal Singh, revealed that Ramgopaul died from drowning.
Kaieteur News was told that there was some evidence of trauma to the head, but that this was “consistent with him falling and drowning.”
Police had questioned several people during their investigations.
Ramgopaul disappeared last Sunday during a family outing at a creek on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway. His body was found two days later in an area in the same creek where relatives, aided by a diver, had searched frantically for him.
Relatives said that the teen had gone to use a nearby washroom when he vanished. They suggested that he was abducted by a gang of young men, killed at another location and then taken back to the creek.
Police had detained six persons, including a woman, following initial reports that the teen was abducted. Among them were two individuals who reside in the same East Coast Demerara village as the victim’s family.
There were reports that the teenager was seen with the two villagers shortly before he disappeared.
The teenager’s mother, Jankie Seetaram, said that on Sunday, her son spent about 10 minutes in the creek and decided that he had enough since the water was cold.
According to the woman, her son went to use a nearby washroom just as the family was preparing to leave. After about 15 minutes had passed and Ramgopaul did not return, the family went in search of him.
They combed the entire area for hours without finding the 14-year-old. They eventually went home but returned to the area and resumed the search the following day.
The family eventually received word on Monday that Ramgopaul was last seen with two young men from their village and they were directed to where one of the men was staying. The man and others were arrested.
Kaieteur News was told that one of the suspects claimed that Ramgopaul was with them in a house on Sunday night.
Police arrested a woman who owned the house, but she denied any knowledge of the missing child.
Ms. Seetaram said that on Monday afternoon the police tried to search the woman’s house, but her husband prevented them from doing so.
At around 06:00 hours on Tuesday, the family was informed that a body was in the creek where they had picnicked. The victim turned out to be Dhaniram Ramgopaul.
Ms. Seetaram said she observed that there were black and blue marks on the torso, which she believed indicated that her son was beaten.
“The blood was fresh, the body was fresh, the tummy was just beginning to swell and the pirai eat on it. He had some black and blue marks on his neck,” Seeteram said.
