Winners Connection down Eagles United 3-1, Hi Stars fly past Topp XX 2-1
This year’s finalists in the 2nd edition of the Upper Demerara Football Association’s GT Beer Supa 16 Knockout football championship had to overcome early leads by their opponents, but prevailed for enthralling wins Sunday night in the semifinals at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
The reigning champions Winners Connection clipped their way past the Christianburg unit Eagles United with a thumping 3-1 win, while Hi Stars will reach for the sky after nudging out Bakewell Topp XX 2-1 to set up a final between Winners Connection, who is seeking their second successive title and Hi Stars in search of their first at this level.
Winners Connection were pegged back when striker Dellon Charter sent Eagles ahead just 23 minutes into the first half, but there was no choking from the defending champions who showed their poise when they got the equaliser. It came five minute before the first half closed out where veteran forward Rawle ‘Boney’ Gittens sent a corner into the box where the strapping figure of Chris Young was there to head home the equaliser in the 40th minute.
In the 43rd minute, Gittens collected a squared ball coming from the right from Stanford Bovell which he headed home for a 2-1 lead which they retained at half time.
The champions then upped the tempo in the second half and by the 54th minute they took control with another goal set up by Gittens to the sturdy Renee Gibbons who took control before landing home a shot that gave them a 3-1 cushion which they never released and won the right to defending their crown on New Year’s Night.
The other semifinal saw the eventual losers taking control, this time ten minutes into the first half Topp XX snatched the lead through striker Terrence Aaron as he cleaned up a blunder from the opposing goalkeeper to score.
Hi Stars, never failed to counter and in the 20th minute they were able to knot the scores after Tony Adams’ shot was missed by the goalkeeper in the six yards box and an alert Julian Allicock made him pay for the lapse as he slapped home for Hi Stars and a 1-1 score.
The game was tied and neither side could break the deadlock until the 88th minute when the Hi Stars side sent their tall central defender into the goal mouth. From a corner the dangling Stephan Tappin rose above his markers to head home the winner as the game eventually ended 2-1 for the West Watooka side.
The losers will now face each other in the first game and the winner’s battle for $1M prize come New Year’s Day.
