Underprivileged families in Region Ten were treated to lunch, drinks and gifts last Sunday at Benjamin’s residence in Amelia’s Ward, compliments of overseas-based couple Mr. and Mrs. Esmond Field.
Ms. Joan Field, former Staff Registered Nurse at the Mackenzie Hospital, said that this is the seventh year that she has been making Christmas a joy for the people of Linden and its environs.
“When I was a nurse here, I saw the needs of many, heard the cries of many children not being able to get a doll, a gun, saw parents not being able to provide a toy to make their children happy, so I decided when I left Guyana, that I would do something.
Only seven years ago I actually started and I just put out the things there, and what fits you take.”
Aunty Joanie, as she is called by everyone, said that she does it in a particular area every year, last year it was Canvas City but this year she decided to treat Amelia’s Ward and the villages on the highway as far as Moblissa.
She said that as soon as people hear “Aunty Joanie” they would come even if they are not from the area. She doesn’t turn them away.
The recipients were overwhelmed with their gifts and thanked Mr. and Mrs. Field.
The gifts include shoes, clothes, school bags and hair accessories for the children.
