The Police in Berbice Police ‘B’ Division on Saturday made some inroads into the criminal enterprise in Berbice when they arrested four men who allegedly staged two armed robberies and an attempt hijacking within a week.
The men were said to be on a rampage. They have been charged with two counts of robbery under arms and one count of attempt to commit a felony.
The robbers, Kenneth Ramsay, called “Short man” 28, of 23 Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant; Avinash Brijbasie, 18; a 15-year-old, called “Rocky” and Vijay Ramdharry called “Coco Boy” 20, all of Lot 82 Tain Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared on Monday before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Whim Magistrate’s court and were remanded to jail.
Three of the men–Ramsay, Brijbasie, and Vijay Ramdharry– while being armed with a gun, robbed Rajesh Ramsammy of one Toyota Carina 212 motor car PPP 1108 valued $1.4 million on December 23, at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
It is also alleged that during the same time they robbed Gavindradat Sasenarine of two cellular Phones and $23,000 in cash.
Ramsay, Ramdharry and the 15-year-old while being armed with a gun robbed Balraj Surjanauth of one Cellular Phone, on December 23, at Tain, Corentyne, Berbice.
They were not required to plead. Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sherriff objected to bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. He also made an application to the court for the motor vehicle to be returned to the owner.
The men will return to court on January 21, next.
They are also accused of attempting to commit a robbery under arms.
The men were nabbed after they were in the process of conducting another robbery when the driver managed to escape. One of the men had stopped the car on the public road and two others joined the vehicle.
The men had told the driver to drive down a street in Hampshire, then ordered him to stop. When the driver realized what was going on, he drove away before the men could have reacted and reported the matter to the Albion Police station.
Contact was made with a patrol that was in the vicinity. It responded promptly and cornered the men not too far from where the driver left them. One was chased and arrested and after being interrogated decided to spill the beans. The cops were able to apprehend the others and after searching in an open field, were able to unearth the two improvised shotguns, a knife, a toque, mask and a cell phone.
Ramsammy who recently returned from Suriname is said to be the mastermind.
In a release, the police stated that during investigations into two armed robberies that occurred at Tain and Anchorville, Port Mourant, Corentyne, on December 23, 2014, the police on Saturday December 27, arrested three men at Port Mourant and recovered two improvised shotguns, a knife, a toque and a cell phone that was stolen during one of the robberies.
