The Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency (CRMA) registered 2,911 persons in 2014 who sought jobs; 2,857 found placements, according to the Labour Ministry.
However, the Minister of Labour, Dr. Nanda Gopaul, had pointed to the need to change the name of the CRMA in 2015 since ‘manpower’ is becoming outdated.
The Labour Ministry noted that the development of software has been operational in all the regions which have internet access.
In addition, visits to Regions Three, Five, Eight, Nine and Ten have seen mechanisms put in place to extend the services of the agency in the administrative regions. This has helped to collect and store relevant data with available positions to be filled, as well as matching of potential employees to available jobs.
Meanwhile, Guyana Labour Union President, Carvil Duncan, had noted that many job seekers are seeking top brass positions. He believes that persons are pursuing academic careers, and not careers for jobs that are available.
He said the fight against unemployment is recognized around the world annually, but questioned whether in Guyana there is unemployment or underemployment.
“It’s a fundamental question,” he said, “but it cannot be answered without considering whether citizens are training for employment or just professional careers.
“Thousands go to the local university, but they are not going to seek technical jobs…Who doesn’t want to be a doctor, wants to be a lawyer; who doesn’t want to be a lawyer, wants to be a public servant and who doesn’t want to be a public servant, wants to be a manager.
Who will we manage if there is no training for technical people?”
Duncan said that around the country, authorities hear statements that refer to qualified university students gaining qualifications, but can’t find work. That is the dilemma, he said.
“There are a lot of jobs for a lot of people, but we are concentrating in the wrong way.”
The CRMA made its services available online in 2010 through a public/ private sector modernisation and e-governance programme that allows persons with access to the internet to make submissions if they are seeking employment from anywhere in the country.
Active jobseekers can log onto the CRMA website (http://www.crma-gy.com/) and register as a member. However, recently the website has been down.
After registration, an employer can publish information on the website about the vacancy available.
This is followed by a telephone contact to certify the details for the vacancy. Once this information is established, a jobseeker will be selected.
