– dead teen’s mother pleads with runaway driver
“The boy you killed was my son, the backbone for the home. He worked very hard to take care of his smaller siblings and me. You took him away from us and now you are hiding! Come out and face the consequences for your action.”
These are the pleas of Jasmattie Deokaran to Asif Khan, the driver who fled the scene after killing her 18-year-old son, Parmanand, two Sundays ago at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD), to surrender.
Mrs. Deokaran’s son and two of his friends, Davendra Mangal and Kayshane Ramnarine, were standing in front of the Princess International Hotel waiting on a taxi, when a motorcar ploughed into them.
The teenagers were hurled into a nearby trench and Deokaran, who had sustained head injuries, succumbed while his friends were hospitalized nursing various injuries.
The driver, who was later identified as Asif Khan, fled the scene, leaving his vehicle, bearing registration number PRR 555, and two passengers still inside.
The dead teen’s mother in an interview yesterday said that she did the unthinkable on Saturday- she cremated one of her seven children.
The devastated woman said that since the accident, neither the driver nor any of his family has contacted her to offer their condolences.
“I want him to come forward. He killed my son so he has to pay for it. My son was not a bad person, he didn’t deserve that.”
According to Mrs. Deokaran, her son, who was employed as a welder at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara left his home to attend his staff party with his friends.
She added that a few hours after the teen left, one of his friends called and informed her of the accident.
“When I went to Public Hospital, they had them (her son and his friends) inside the Emergency room on different beds. My son was already dead. They had him wrapped up already,” the older Deokaran recalled.
She said that the only reason her son went to the party was to “show his face a little.”
“He doesn’t drink or smoke. He was a really good boy,” the mother said.
Meanwhile a police source told this newspaper that Khan, the alleged runaway driver, continues to elude the radar.
The source said that ranks have searched Khan’s home several times.
“The wife said that she saw him four days prior to the accident and that he had left to go to the interior,” an officer who is close to the case said.
The wife reportedly also told investigators that although she and the suspect are married, they hardly spend time together.
“She said he hardly spends time at home and that he spends most of his time with friends. We asked her about Khan’s siblings but she said that one lives in Canada and another lives in Venezuela and that he has no family here.”
The source said that the Guyana Police Force will be issuing a wanted bulletin for the suspect very soon.
