Two Pomeroon families are currently making preparations to bury their dead mere days after two separate boat accidents were recorded in the Pomeroon River, on Christmas day.
Dead are two-year-old Osmin Marcus, formerly of Grant Free Town, Lower Pomeroon River, and 18-year-old Stephen Welcome of Grant Eversham also of the Lower Pomeroon.
Little Marcus, who was traveling in a 15-horse power engine boat manned by her mother, drowned.
Marcus’ grandfather, Brother Chris, explained that the toddler and her other siblings and mother were visiting relatives, at Grant Trial, a tradition that is usually practised by persons living in Pomeroon especially during the Christmas season.
Brother Chris added that while Marcus’ mother, who was manning the boat, was attempting to leave her relatives for her Grant Free Town, Lower Pomeroon home, the boat encountered engine problems, forcing her to lobby for assistance to start the boat.
The saddened grandfather said that Marcus’ boat was subsequently towed to another boat but during that process, it boat capsized emptying all its occupants into the Pomeroon River.
Quick efforts by Marcus’ mother to rescue the others were successful. Unfortunately, little Osmin was not saved.
On Friday afternoon the toddler’s relatives recovered her body.
The body was later transported to the Charity Outpost to await a Post Mortem examination is scheduled to be performed on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old miner Stephen Welcome, formerly of Grant Eversham, Lower Pomeroon River, lost his life after he was involved in an accident, around 6:30PM Christmas evening. One of Welcome’s relatives said that the young miner left his Eversham home and was transporting his girlfriend two miles away from his residence when he was involved in an accident with the police.
As he was returning home, the boat which Welcome was manning allegedly collided with a boat that was transporting detectives who had gone into Grant Free Town to question Marcus’ relatives about her death.
Welcome’s relatives said he was transported to the Oscar Joseph Hospital by a boat operator where he later died. Welcome sustained severe injuries to his head and feet. A Post Mortem is scheduled for Tuesday as well.
