Police are seeking advice from the chambers of the Director of Public Prosecution in connection with the recent death of 19-year-old, Davendra Jaipaul, a/k “Davin”, formerly of Dunkel, Essequibo Coast.
The young mechanic lost his life after he was hit down by a popular Essequibo businessman son.
The accident occurred Christmas evening, four doors from Jaipaul’s home.
Relatives of the dead mechanic said that Jaipaul left his home shortly before 19:00 hours Christmas Day and was heading for his aunt’s residence, at Ex-Mouth, a village away.
Jaipaul was said to be riding his bicycle. He would usually sleep at his aunt’s whenever her husband was at sea.
On Christmas night however, while Jaipaul was venturing to his aunt’s home he became the victim of a fatal hit and run accident.
Jaipaul’s aunt was expecting him so she became worried after Jaipaul didn’t turn up at her house Christmas evening. The distraught woman said she became even alarmed after calls to Jaipaul’s phone went unanswered.
The woman said she later ventured on the road and discovered her nephew’s mangled body. Jaipaul’s mother, Indira Jaipaul, who fainted repeatedly, said that her son was playing in a masquerade band earlier Christmas Day.
She said that her son was heading north on the Dunkel Public road, while the businessman’s son, who was traveling in a Sports Utility vehicle was heading in the opposite direction when the collision occurred.
Jaipaul’s relatives are maintaining that he was in his right lane when he was struck down and killed on the Dunkel Public road by the businessman’s youngest son. Both the businessman and his son have since been released on station bail.
Further reports are indicating that the businessman has told the police that he was driving his vehicle at the time of the accident, while persons are claiming that it was the his son.
The police at Anna Regina Police station who have since launched an investigation into the recent fatal accident are trying to ascertain which of two theories of the story is correct.
