A woman climbed onto the rails of the Demerara Harbour Bridge and jumped into
the deep waters just after noon yesterday. The woman remained unidentified up to press time.
‘Jane Doe’ was clad in a blue jeans and red tank top; and has a tattoo on her left arm. Her shoes and umbrella were found on the bridge.
Just about 45 minutes after she was seen throwing herself off of the bridge, the woman’s lifeless body was recovered by officials from the Coast Guard and the Maritime Administration. The body was taken to a nearby wharf but later returned to the bridge before being taken to the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
Traffic Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, Brion Singh, confirmed the incident. He told Kaieteur News that an investigation was underway. He said the identity of the woman is not known but also confirmed that her body has been recovered.
The incident drew the attention of many who crossed the bridge. Some were even taken aback by the occurrence.
The Demerara Harbour Bridge links the East and West banks of the Demerara River. It stretches for just over a mile long and is a floating bridge that would routinely retract to allow vessels to pass. The bridge features a walkway for pedestrians and cyclists. It was from this walkway that the woman is believed to have jumped.
