The battle for the $1.5 Million first place prize in the inaugural Stag Super XV1 three-association knock-out tournament is now down to the final eight teams and will get cracking this afternoon at the Buxton Community Centre ground, East Coast Demerara.
In the feature showdown from 20:00hrs it will be an East Coast/East Bank battle between Buxton United and Grove Hi Tech. Buxton were pushed to the hilt in turning back the challenge of another East Bank side, Kuru Kururu Warriors in the final round-of-16 game on Tuesday evening last at the Victoria Ground.
The Linden Soesdyke Highway based Warriors drew first blood through a Cordel Johnson 19th minute goal but Buxton responded in like manner in the 38th minute when Eson Hamer blasted the nets. The remaining minutes in the first and second halves did not break the deadlock. Extra time was required to separate the teams and it was Buxton who would take the lead for the first time in the game and they never relinquished same. Michael Phyll scored in the 102nd minute to seal the Warriors’ fate and secure their quarter final date with Grove, this evening.
The first game from 18:00hrs is an all Berbice affair between Monedderlust and New Amsterdam United.
The latter team has scored the most goals to date in any single game, a 10-1 hammering of Timehri Panthers. Monedderlust on the other hand had to dig deep to secure their win against Golden Stars in extra time by a 2-1 margin coming from behind.
These two teams will have a score to settle and while they are not playing at home the battle is expected to be fierce.
In the other round-of-16 game on Tuesday, Victoria Kings were large and in charge against Corriverton Links as they ran away 3-0 winners. The game started at a feverish pace with Corriverton matching their more accomplished rivals play for play.
The Berbice side held their own for quite some time as Victoria tried their utmost to break them down. The separating goal finally came in the first minute of added on time (45+1), veteran Aubrey Gibson scoring with a well placed left foot volley that had goal written all over it from the time it left his feet.
Corriverton’s goalkeeper, George Burgess stood up firm for the entire half but just was not up to the task of keep Gibson’s shot from rocking the nets. The second half was dominated by the home team which scored two more goals compliments of Orin Elias in the 63rd and 75th minute to seal a comfortable win and a quarter final show-down with fellow East Coast side Ann’s Grove tomorrow at the Victoria ground in the feature match up from 20:00hrs.
Mahaica Determinators and Cougars will face off in the opening game tomorrow from 18:00hrs. The respective winners from today and tomorrow will earn semi final spots on December 28 at the Buxton ground where the finalists will be decided.
The grand finale is set for Thursday January 1st, 2015 at the #5 ground, West Coast Berbice.
