A 27-year-old mother of two was killed on the spot at around 14.30 hrs yesterday, after she was struck by a speeding driver on the Vriesland, West Bank Demerara public road.
According to reports, Khemwattie Mohabir, of Lot 70 Vriesland, had just finished her Christmas Eve shopping, and was heading home with her sons, aged seven and six, when a speeding driver struck her from behind. Police said that she was flung several feet from the point of impact.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver who struck the young mother took her to the West Bank Demerara Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
There are suggestions that the driver may have been intoxicated. A police official said that traffic ranks are to have him undergo a breathalyzer test.
Police officials have expressed concern about the number of individuals who have been driving under the influence and have begun to release information of the culprits.
