The number of road fatalities keeps skyrocketing as the year draws to a close. On Tuesday, four people died in two accidents that could have been avoided.
Yonette Branch, a 16-year-old was in a car driven by her father when the vehicle crashed into a parked truck at Number 26 Village, West Coast Berbice. The teenager was in the back seat and was the only fatality. The police later suggested that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
He was driving from the city with his family, having gone to Georgetown on personal family business related to the Christmas season. The driver, Alfred Branche, his wife and another passenger are in hospital.
Then a few hours later another car crashed into an immovable object—a utility pole. A little further up the West Berbice Public Road, at Number Six Village, the car driven by Pash Jienarine, 35, of Bath Housing Scheme and passenger, Rakesh Sukdeo, 33, known as Cerex of Bush Lot were passengers in the car. They died instantly.
The third fatality Chaitnarine Mangru said to be a friend of both Jienarine and Mangru, was reportedly driving behind the other car. After the crash he immediately rushed to help them. That was when disaster struck. He reportedly came into contact with a live GPL wire and was electrocuted.
The four fatalities have pushed the number of people killed on the roads to near record proportions.
