General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Clement Rohee, yesterday lambasted the Opposition for its stance against certain projects which are deemed by the government to be good for Guyana.
The joint parliamentary opposition has been very critical of a number of projects conceived by the PPP administration saying that most were born in controversy and surrounded by ominous secrecy.
Yesterday, Rohee noted, it has not escaped the attention of the PPP that APNU and “its underling, the AFC, is targeting those projects that are designed to impact directly on the well-being of the Guyanese people.”
In this regard Rohee rhetorically questioned, “Which party that truly and genuinely cares for the well being of the Guyanese people would stand in the way of projects such as the Amalia Falls Hydro-electric power which is designed to provide the Guyanese people with cheap and reliable power?”
He asked also, “Which caring political party would block the construction of a Specialty Hospital” or the “modernization of its international airport and a spanking and modern Marriott Hotel which would make Guyana more tourism friendly and serve to attract more visitors to the country?”
Rohee told the media that the People’s National Congress (PNC) and its political acolytes have embraced an approach to politics that is clearly anti-national and anti-people.
He said that the PPP has declared its willingness to sacrifice the good of the country on the altar of narrow partisan self-interest.
Rohee said that the PNC lacks the moral right to criticize the current administration “after having reduced this country to a laughing stock in the region and beyond. Because of mismanagement and incompetence billions of dollars went down the drains on several in conceived projects which never saw the light of day.”
The General Secretary said that the PPP wishes to assure the Guyanese that it will not allow the development momentum unleashed by the PPP/C administration to be derailed by threats and political blackmail “especially by those who were responsible in the first place for the destruction of the economic and social fabric of our society.”
