…victim’s relatives in fear after receiving death threats
Some claim that he is still around, but the relatives of Mahanrani Udairaj believe that her husband who is suspected of murdering her is hiding in Suriname.
Davendra Hansraj, also called ‘Dog Man’, has not been seen since his wife’s body was found in the couple’s lot 17 Grant 1780 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice home lying with her face down in a pool of blood and a gaping wound to her neck.
The killing allegedly occurred last Thursday night during an argument between Hansraj and Udairaj.
The 43-year-old man reportedly fled the home and the body of the 28-year-old mother of one was found after their landlord Zamalindeen Khan, who resides in the bottom flat of the house, noticed something dripping from the floor above.
Reports indicate that upon closer inspection, Khan, who had returned home shortly after 19:00 hours that night, realized it was blood. He summoned the police and when they checked, Udairaj’s bloodied body was found lying in the flat above.
The mother of the slain woman, Sandra Vasquez, who resides in Bronx, New York, said that she received a call that her daughter met her demise at the hands of her partner of three years. She arrived in Guyana last Saturday and has not heard from her son-in-law.
Vasquez is sure that her daughter was killed by her partner. She suspects that Hansraj, a boat captain on one of the small boats that ply the Corentyne River to Suriname, is hiding in Suriname.
The woman has also said that Hansraj has threatened her life and the lives of three other family members.
“He threaten me that he will kill me and that he has four more people he gun kill,” she said. According to the mother, the man had “left a message” with neighbours who warned her to be careful.
Vasquez said that her son-in-law intends to take his own life after he completes this “mission.”
“He always threaten me, he always says that he will kill me when I try to save my daughter…Now we’re scared; everybody is scared that he can come,” the mother related.
Vasquez is also fearful for Udairaj’s eight-year-old daughter whom she claims Hansraj never liked. The said little girl had witnessed her stepfather batter her mother on several occasions.
Neighbours are also fearful, Vasquez added. The relative is appealing to the police to intensify their search.
According to reports, the couple lived in the upper flat of a two-storey house.
The woman has been the victim of constant abuse and the couple was heard in the usual argument around 17:30 hrs last Thursday night. Neighbours did not pay much attention since it was a regular occurrence but after a while the argument stopped. Still no one paid any mind.
The landlord stated that he was not at home at the time of the incident but when he returned home around 19:00 hrs, the place was quiet so he decided to watch television.
His curiosity was aroused when he noticed something dripping from the floor above. Upon closer inspection he realized it was blood. He immediately alerted a neighbour and summoned the police who responded immediately.
On their arrival they went into the upper flat where the woman was found lying with her face down in a pool of blood and a gaping wound to her neck.
It is understood that the woman went to Georgetown on Thursday to conduct some business for her daughter. It is believed it was that visit that led to the argument. On her return, the argument erupted.
The man who usually displayed jealous tendencies believed that woman was having an affair and would usually accuse her. He would even stop her from talking to the neighbours.
If she was caught talking to anyone she would be the victim of constant harassment.
It is understood that the woman was injured before in the region of her abdomen and had undergone surgery. Due to the threats and her love for the man the woman would usually decline to press charges. On the occasion when she was injured she had claimed that thieves had invaded the house.
A post mortem examination performed on the woman’s body last Friday by Dr. Vivekanand Bridgemohan at the Skeldon Hospital showed that she died from asphyxiation, lack of oxygen due to blood in her lungs and the stab wound to the neck.
Udairaj leaves to mourn her only child, her parents, other siblings and many relatives.
