A midnight accident on the Essequibo River has left a speedboat captain missing.
According to the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), police are now trying to locate another vessel which caused the boat to capsize.
Missing is Patrick Reynolds, 65, of Big Hope, Essequibo Coast.
MARAD said that around midnight Sunday, a motor vessel powered by two outboard engines, capsized in the Essequibo River leaving Reynolds missing.
Six other persons, who were also in the vessel which was travelling from Itaballi to Teperu in the Essequibo River, were subsequently rescued and taken to shore safely by a passing vessel. MARAD said that it is cooperating with police from Bartica, a community on the Essequibo Rivr, to locate the other boat which allegedly caused the vessel to capsize.
Police in a separate statement, gave Reynolds’s name as “Roy” and his address as Teperu.
“Investigations have revealed that Roy Reynolds was in a small boat with four other men which capsized after it was struck by a wave caused by a passing vessel,” the police said.
