In recognition of the value and contributions of teachers, the Bartica Association – New York, in collaboration with the Bartica/Three Miles Board of Governors, sponsored a Teachers’ Appreciation and Awards Ceremony last Monday to bestow honour upon several educators in the region.
Alisa Holmes, Most Improved Teacher of Three Miles Secondary receives her award from Eion Williams – Board Member and representative of Bartica Association.
The ceremony which was attended by Regional Education Officer (REO), Charles Holmes; Regional Chairman, Gordon Bradford; Members of the Board of Governors, Head Teachers of the various schools in Bartica and other officials, saw outstanding teachers of the Bartica and Three Miles Secondary schools receiving awards and tokens for their contribution over the last academic year.
The event was held at Leanna’s Kiddies Park on Fifth Avenue, Bartica.
During the ceremony, Tamika Edwards of Three Miles Secondary School was adjudged the Teacher of the Year for Three Miles Secondary and Paulette Peters for Bartica Secondary School.
They were both awarded for their commitment to quality delivery of education and working beyond the call of duty, among other things.
Meanwhile, Alisa Holmes of Three Miles Secondary School and Judy Constantine of Bartica Secondary School were awarded for being the most improved teachers over the last academic year.
While teachers of both schools also received tokens of appreciation, Teacher of the Year awardees received plaques and $20,000 while the most improved teachers received plaques and $15,000. The awards were sponsored by Bartica Association – New York.
Speaking at the event, Chairperson of the Board, Rita Brouet outlined the goals of the awards scheme.
The Teachers Awards Scheme was instituted to motivate teachers to improve the quality of education offered at the school, leading to improved learning and results which will be consistent with the possible establishment of a Sixth Form School.
Focus was also placed on greater teacher-parent relationships, teacher-teacher and teacher-community.
Also addressing the gathering, the REO disclosed that at the last Regional Educational Officers meeting, he was informed that Three Miles Secondary, which was previously ranked among the top 20 Secondary schools, has since moved to be among the top 10.
The Regional Chairman also addressed the gathering.
During the ceremony, attendees were treated to a poem recital by Jermaine Joseph and a brass instrumental by Sergio Joseph. Also, to help celebrate the Christmas season, a team rendered a medley of carols.
