Outstanding performances by Jonathan Foo, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai and Eugene LaFleur guided Universal DVD Berbice Titans to a 29-run victory over Universal President’s XI in the final of the Universal DVD Club and Universal Solutions T20 festival on Saturday last.
Members of the victorious Universal DVD Berbice Titans display their prizes with Chief Executive Officer of Universal Solutions and Universal DVD Store Vickram Seubarran (stooping at far right). Coach Julian Moore is at standing at extreme left.
Playing under the lights at the Albion Community Centre ground, Titans posted 128 for 3 off their 20 overs, batting first on a flat track.
Kandasammy Surujnarine struck 40 (3×4, 1×6), skipper Devendra Thakurdeen scored 36, while Foo slammed 35 (1×4,2×6) off 33 balls.
President’s XI were reduced to 7-2 in reply, losing the wickets of Brentnol Woolford and skipper Lloydel Lewis. They never really recovered as La Fleur (2 for 14) and Motie-Kanhai combined to restrict them to 99 for 9, with the last man Suresh Dhanai being unable to bat for unknown reasons.
Surujnarine started positively taking boundaries off Dhanai before he lost Ramsammy (10) at 45 for 1. Surujnarine was next to go, bowled by West Berbice’s Andrew Dutchin for 40 which came off 34 deliveries at 76 for 2.
The usually aggressive Foo looked sedate and only opened his shoulders in the final over off which he scored 14 runs; Dutchin and Ramoo took one wicket each for 13 and 17 runs respectively.
Pacers Raun Johnson and Romario Shepherd bowled with pace and aggression when the President’s XI batted, removing Woolford and Lewis to short deliveries.
Dutchin and Keon De Jesus repaired the early damage by adding 28 for the third wicket before Dutchin was brilliantly stumped on the second attempt by Jason Sinclair off La Fleur.
De Jesus, who top-scored with 35 (2×4) and Sherwin Murray (11), tried to keep their team in the hunt with a 27-run fourth wicket stand. Motie Kanhai uprooted the stumps of Murray and sent back Sharaz Ramcharran (03) leaving the President’s XI on 75-5. From then it was all down hill as Foo wrapped up the innings in the final over. Kanhai ended with four wickets, while La Fleur and Foo had two each.
In the third place encounter, Universal Warriors batted first and scored 116 for 4. David Latchaya led with 33; Damion Vantull made 20 and Hakeem Hinds 17. Universal Solution Tigers were sent packing for 95 in 19.5 overs in reply. Anthony D’Andrade scored 24 and Devon Clements 19. Shawn Pereira snared 4- 19.
The female exhibition contest sharpened the appetite of the fans who were also entertained by the X-Factor Dance troupe. Firebirds, led by Tremayne Smartt defeated Shemaine Campbell’s Mean Girls by nine wickets.
Batting first, Mean Girls managed 66 for 7 off their 20 overs, with Shanna Vanderstoop scoring 22 and Shabika Gajnabi 15.
Steffi Rodney took 2 for 12 for the Firebirds, who in reply reached 69 for 1 from 16.4 overs. Latoya Smith stroked 27 and Melanie Henry slammed 25.
The Man of the Match award in the Final and third place game went to Foo and Pereira respectively, while Smith took the said trophy for the female encounter. La Fleur was named Most Valuable Player, Foo-Best Batsman and Motie-Kanhai-Best Bowler.
Titans took home $200,000 and a trophy, President’s XI $100,000 and a trophy, while Universal Warriors and Universal Solutions Tigers received $50,000 each, with the Warriors being presented with the third place trophy.
