… grandmother dies, uncle killed, husband jailed and baby dies, all in two weeks
A family already suffering from the effects of two deaths in the family and one person being remanded to jail, has been plunged into further grief with another death. And all within a two – week span.
Bereaved Marita Lakeram Ramjet lived at her grandmother, Jasodra Barnwell’s residence, at Lot 45 Bacchus Street, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice. She lived with her husband, Latchman Samaroo, called ‘Patto’, 28, a fishmonger in an extended family setting which includes 10 children and two other adults.
The woman lost her grandmother on December 10, and gave birth to her fifth child the following day. She lost her uncle under tragic circumstances on December 12 at her grandmother’s wake. Her husband, who is the sole breadwinner of the family, was arrested on December 15, charged and remanded to prison on December 17. Her woes continued when she lost her baby on December 19.
Revealing her sorrowful tale, the woman stated that she left her house and lived with and took care of her grandmother for a number of years. She, who was pregnant at the time, stated that her trouble started when her grandmother fell and broke her foot.
She was hospitalized in the city for 21 days before returning home and subsequently to the Fort Wellington Hospital.
During this time she gave birth to her fifth child, a boy, on December 10. Her grandmother succumbed soon after and that’s when the trouble began. Her relatives began to fight her for the property which her grandmother had willed to her.
It was during one of those upheavals at the wake that her husband and her uncle, Surijpaul Ramnarine, got into another tangle and Ramnarine was stabbed and died from a stab wound on December 12.
Her grandmother was buried on December 14 and her husband gave himself up at the Blairmont Police Station the next day. He was charged with murder and remanded to jail the same day. Her infant child took ill on Thursday, was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital then to the New Amsterdam Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Hospital where he died on Friday morning.
Her mother, Malita Ramjet, who resided in Suriname, had to return home to help take care of her grandmother is at home. In addition, Marita Ramjet was taking care of five other children for an ill sister, as well as that sister. She also stated that they hardly get any public assistance for the children.
The woman stated that her husband who is a fishmonger was the sole bread winner of the family. He owns a bus PGG 2428 and would buy and sell fish with the vehicle. From his returns he would take care of all expenses.
On the night of the incident he had bought $67,000 in fish to sell. She was beaten and the bus windscreen was also smashed during the melee. Although they made reports no police action was taken against the perpetrators. All the fish remained in the freezer in the bus and eventually had to be thrown out.
The woman is studying what would become of the house since a mortgage was taken out on the property and it was her husband who was paying the $30,000 monthly.
Her cousin Vickram Ramnarine 28 was murdered in October.
The woman and her four remaining children – Vishmattee 8, Pooran 6, Vishwadai 5, and Vidya 3 are in a desperate situation and are appealing for help from any quarter.
