Host Den Amstel, fresh off an awe-inspiring display against Wales who they demolished 15-1, will look to duplicate that performance when they face Uitvlugt Warriors in the feature game of semi-final action in the Vitamalt/Aqua Mist sponsored West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Knockout Cup which continues today, at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground.
In the opening fixture, the mighty Slingerz FC tackle Pouderoyen and this encounter could also provide fireworks even though the former should start as overwhelming favourites to advance to the championship game.
The feature clash could pose a difficult challenge for the homesters since Uitvlugt is a different proposition to Wales and with a chance to play in the final a possibility, the team should be ignited by that prospect.
Den Amstel will be pinning their hopes for victory on the likes of the in-form Delon Lanferman, whose performance against Wales must send shivers up the spines of opposing defenders, while Morris Charles, Marvin Henry and Ryan Hunter, all possess the ability to turn a match on its head.
Uitvlugt on the other hand will no doubt be depending on the services of Seon Bobb, Jermaine Accra and Robert Christiani to lead their charge for a win and they should be oozing confidence after registering an impressive win over Eagles in their quarter-final matchup.
The Slingerz versus Pouderoyen encounter should bring out the best in both teams since this is an important game for either side.
Slingerz despite their 5-0 triumph over Beavers did not look as solid as fans are accustomed to seeing them, but with a player the class of former national striker Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams in their line-up, playing even at 70% is adequate enough to defeat most teams on the West Side.
Aside from Abrams, Colin Nelson, Tichard Joseph Joshua Browne, Les Charles Critchlow and Vurlon Mills are more than a handful for any backline locally so they must be favoured to win.
Pouderoyen, however, is a hard working team that exhibits admirable discipline defensively and prying open their backline has proven to be an arduous task for many opponents.
Adrian Giddings, Tenie Lopes, Clement Browne, Marvin Frank, Delon Garraway and Travis Bess will be the spearhead of their quest for a place in the final and Slingerz best advice is not to take them lightly.
But, before the feature games commence a match between veterans from the West Bank and West Coast will be played, starting from 17:00 hrs.
Up for grabs for the winner in the competition is $1million and the championship trophy while second place finisher takes home $500,000 third place $300,000 and fourth place $200,000.
