The GPL electrification programme in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam on Wednesday, hit a snag when a rotten GPL pole fell injuring a worker.
Kaieteur News understands that around 16:30 hrs on Wednesday the workers attached to the Guyana Power and Light Corporation were in the process of attaching electricity lines to houses in the area.
The workers were told to push on with the electrification programme, since the government had promised the people electricity before the Christmas holidays. The worker, Kegan Thompson, was a part of a crew that has been tasked with finishing the work at all cost.
It is understood that the workers were asked to climb a rotten post to attach the line to a house in the area, when the post snapped and fell shattering a fence. The worker who was clinging to the post came down with the wood work.
He suffered serious injuries to his body including a broken arm. He was picked up and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital and later referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
It is understood that the workers had expressed some concern about the state of the posts and wiring in the area, but were instructed to continue working.
