On a slow track in sultry conditions yesterday, leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo grabbed 4-28 for Vishaul Singh’s X1 in a losing cause against Chris Barnwell’s X1 in the first 50-over practice game by the Guyana Jaguars at the Everest ground in preparation for the 2015 NAGICO Super50 cricket tournament slated for Trinidad & Tobago from January 15.
Skipper Singh (36), Kevin Boodie (28), Shemron Hetmyer (27), Robin Bacchus (27), Raymond Reifer (19) and Steven Jacobs (18) all got starts as Singh’s X1 reached 171 in 50 overs. Reifer and Bacchus produced the best partnership of the innings as they added 43 for the fourth wicket. There were two wickets each for Barnwell (2-37), Ronsford Beaton (2-17), Veerasammy Permaul (2-18) and Royston Crandon (2-42) for Barnwell’s X1 who chased down the target successfully and ended on 172-8 in 48.4 overs to win by two wickets.
Rajendra Chandrika (44) and Trevon Griffith (24) provided a solid 70-run first wicket stand before Barbadian left-arm seamer Raymond Reifer, who will return to Barbados for Christmas, removed the left handed Griffith.
Chandrika, who hit six fours, was removed by Jacobs five runs later before Tagenarine Chanderpaul (15) was LBW to left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie to leave the score on 109-3.
Barnwell (24) hit the only six in the contest and also reached the boundary twice before he fell to Bishoo, who also removed Royston Crandon (3), Kemo Paul (5) and Permaul (4) as they all failed to build on good scores, although Jonathon Foo was left-unbeaten on 37 to see his team to victory in a match that most of the batsmen lacked consistency.
The second and final match for the year is set for Everest today from 09:30hrs before the players take a break for Christmas and return to work on January 2.
