After almost six weeks of intense rivalry, Stella Maris ensured that they were the last team left standing after outlasting St. Stephen’s in another penalty shootout to grab the inaugural Ministry of Health / Health 2000Inc / Ministry of Education / Ansa McAl Girls Schools Football Competition which concluded yesterday, at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
The Woolford Avenue-based team won 3-1 on penalty kicks after regulation time failed to produce a goal by either side after a tense and competitive encounter. The victory also meant that the school now owns both the Boys and Girls titles after the former captured the Courts Pee Wee Competition a few weeks ago to crown a fantastic year for them.
The new champions though had to withstand a ferocious onslaught in both halves as St. Stephen’s cognizant of their opponents tenacity in the penalty shootout tried desperately for the win in regulation time.
However, the champs defended doggedly, clearing shots off the line, while the goalkeeper made some important stops and clearances that kept their hopes alive.
When the final whistle sounded it was clear which team seemed more content on having the championship decided on penalties, it was Stella Maris survivors on the spot kicks in their two previous engagements.
In the end, their margin of victory was emphatic thanks to goalkeeper Lukesha Reynolds, daughter of former national goalkeeper Richard Reynolds, who happened to be in attendance.
In the third place playoff, Enterprise enjoyed a similar win over West Ruimveldt after their encounter finished 1-1 in regulation time. Enterprise eventually won 2-1 on penalties.
Earlier, Nikita Prince had given West Ruimveldt the lead in the 16th minute when she fired in a screamer, but three minutes later the prolific Aliyah Elaine produced a comparable thunderbolt to level the proceedings.
Meanwhile, representatives from the sponsors Ministry of Health, Ansa McAl under its Smalta brand and Health 2000Inc gave remarks, during the presentation ceremony.
