– Enterprise and West Ruimveldt to battle for third place
Just when you thought that the quarter-finals would have been the last round of distress for favourites, yesterday’s semi-finals proved to be even more disastrous as both of the pundits’ choices to make it to the final suffered losses via the penalty route.
Playing in the inaugural Ministry of Health / Health 2000Inc / Ministry of Education / Ansa McAl Girls Schools Football Competition which continued with final four action at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue, the previously unbeaten Enterprise was eliminated from the championship game after going down to St. Stephen’s 9-10 in a protracted penalty kicks showdown after their encounter ended in a 1-1 stalemate, while West Ruimveldt exited via a similar route to Stella Maris, losing 2-0 in the penalty shootout.after regulation time finished 0-0.
St. Stephen’s, 2-0 losers to Enterprise in an earlier group stage fixture, seemed to be heading for another disaster when Enterprise took the lead after three minutes following a goal mouth scrimmage which saw Akesha Glasgow prod home from close range.
However, they defended stoutly to go to the half just behind by the solitary strike. They came out of the break looking more purposeful and won a penalty after twenty-four minutes when Glasgow was found guilty of handling the ball in the sacred area, forcing Referee Wayne Griffith to award the spot kick which was duly buried by Odelle Straughn.
The scores remained deadlocked until the final whistle sounded to signal penalty kicks.
St. Stephen’s moves on to face Stella Maris in what is already being touted to be a thrilling final on Thursday at the same venue.
Earlier, Stella Maris got to the final after beating West Ruimveldt 2-0 on penalty kicks which means that Enterprise and West Ruimveldt will battle in the playoff for third place.
In the other results of the day, North Georgetown defeated F.E. Pollard 1-0 compliments of an Angel Denny strike in the fifth minute in the 5-8 playoffs. They will now engage South Ruimveldt for the fifth spot after the latter squeezed past Tucvville 1-0.
Keiara Phillips booted the winner for South Ruimveldt in the 5th minute of play.
Tucville will take on F.E. Pollard for the seventh spot, while St. Pius occupied ninth after edging St. Margaret’s 1-0 through Britney Sampson’s goal which came in the 3rd minute.
In the first encounter, East La Penitence gained a walkover from Smith Memorial to finish 11th.
