Unadulterated slugfests are anticipated when the nation’s young boxers bare fists when the
Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) collaborates with the Demerara Distillers Ltd for this year’s final edition of the Pepsi/GBA U-16 boxing tournament scheduled for the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym, Independence Boulevard, tomorrow.
To date, 30 boxers have enrolled and yesterday morning, DDL Marketing rep, Larry Wills, journeyed to the Main Street office of President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, and handed over the requisite cheque to facilitate the organizational process. Director of bouts, Terrence Poole, was also at the forum.
The DDL representative conveyed best wishes on behalf of the executives of his organization and wished the boxers and organizers well. “We are proud to be a part of this tournament which, to my mind, has been the catalyst to the development of the boxers,” said Mr. Wills. He also committed to continued support as the boxers endeavour to reach the pinnacle of their trade.
The GBA President expressed gratitude to his benefactor even as he informed the media that the GBA is working assiduously to provide opportunities for young pugilists in all ten administrative regions. He said that over the past year they have successfully taken the sport to several rural communities including Berbice spread and Mahdia, an interior locale that is the latest affiliate of the GBA.
Additionally, local boxing authorities will soon collaborate with their counterparts from Suriname in the organization of exchange programmes. President of the Suriname Boxing Association has paid a courtesy call to Mr. Ninvalle earlier in the week and the two Presidents held fruitful collaborative discussions. The Surinamese President has also indicated a desire to work closely with his Guyanese counterpart to stage more youth tournaments. The first punch throws at 13:00hrs sharp.
