Lionel Jaikarran returned unopposed as President of the Georgetown Cricket
Club (GCC) when the organisation held its Annual General Meeting on Monday night last at the club’s pavilion. Ramsay Alli will serve as the Vice President while Jameel Baksh will act as Secretary. The treasurer is Pratab Singh and Greame Alli is the club captain while the committee members are Phillip Fernandes, Glenn Hanoman and Les Ramalho.
The club was founded in 1858 and it was the first time in its history females were allowed to participate in their AGM as regular members.
Speaking after the elections, Jaikarran stated that he was thrilled that females participated. He said that the club continues to stand tall despite of some challenges and lauded manager Rudolph Singh for doing an excellent job. He added that the lost of test cricket at the venue was a severe blow to the club in terms of membership and therefore finances. “Coupled with an injunction which is ongoing that prevents the club from holding concerts and other related events, the club has had a difficult time to make ends meet adding that they have to work feverishly to remain financially stable,” he pointed out.
The president informed that the club is allowed to host three musical events per year with the permission of Rex Mc Kay and the injunction is still engaging the attention of the courts.
The club has done well at all levels of cricket in 2014 and Leon Johnson has moved on from the West Indies A team to the test side and is currently in South Africa with his club mate Shivnarine Chanderpaul while Robin Bacchus and Vishal Singh continue to do well with guidance from coaches Monty Lynch and Harold Dhanraj.
Jaikarran pointed out that one of its members Richard Jodah recently donated a roller to the club and thanked him for his input. He also thanked Paul Chan A Sue, Ramalho and Ramsay Alli for their continued support stating that hockey continues to flourish under the management of Phillip Fernandes. He explained that the club will work towards improving the drainage facilities as soon as the weather permits.
