Bandits escaped with money and travel documents after holding a Brazilian businessman and his Guyanese-born wife at gunpoint outside their Regent Street store at around 18.00 hrs on Thursday.
The victims, who own the CBS International, said that the two gunmen, aided by a third man in a white, heavily tinted car, struck just before closing time. The couple said that “a substantial amount” of cash was stolen but declined to elaborate.
The Brazilian businessman, who declined to be identified, said that he was about to close his Regent and Light Street establishment, when a woman approached and asked to look at a large toy car that was on display near the entrance. After looking at the car for about 20 minutes, the woman left, while indicating that she would telephone her sister to come and see the item.
The businessman said that he was closing the door when he heard someone say: “You (expletive); lie down or I gun shoot.” He said he then turned to the visitor and found himself staring into the barrel of a gun. “I look at the gun and he say ‘if you doan lie down I gun shoot’.”
An employee who was with him was also ordered to lay face-down.
The Brazilian national said he then heard screams, and realised that the gunmen were attacking his wife, who was sitting in a car outside the store. Kaieteur News understands that the gunmen relieved the woman of a bag containing what the victims said was “a substantial amount” of cash. Their travel documents were also stolen.
Afterwards, the robbers escaped west down Regent Street in a white, heavily-tinted car.
The victims expressed concern that bandits appear to be targeting city businesses during the approaching Christmas season.
