Guyanese trio Leon Johnson, Narsingh Deonarine and Veerasammy Permaul were yesterday named the West Indies
30-man provisional squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand in February and March, 2015.
Johnson, Assad Fudadin and veteran Shiv Chanderpaul are with the Test team in South Africa but Fudadin and Chanderpaul were not considered for selection for the World Cup while Devendra Bishoo, who is having a decent Four-Day tournament with the ball for the Guyana Jaguars and who made his International debut in the last World Cup is also missing for the 30-man squad.
Deonarine and Permaul, both from Albion in Berbice, had had outstanding starts to the Franchise season with left-arm spinner Permaul’s 33 wickets the most after the first phase of four matches in addition to scoring an unbeaten half-century in the last game.
Deonarine is only behind Devon Smith on the runs aggregate and the only two batsmen to reach 300 runs so far. He is also one of six batsmen to have scored centuries after starting the season with back-to-back tons in the first two games. He has also contributed with his off –spin with nine wickets including a five wicket haul.
Chris Gayle, who pulled out of the South Africa Test series is among the 30 named as is Kieron Pollard, the Bravo siblings, Marlon Samuels and the two unrelated Smiths, Dwayne and Devon. The squad includes several players who are yet to play at the One-Day International level. These are left arm seamer Kenroy Peters; Imran Khan, the experienced leg-spinning all-rounder; off-spinner Ashley Nurse; 19-year-old fast bowler Marquino Mindley; Evin Lewis, the 22-year-old left-handed opener; and Jonathan Carter, the left-hander from Barbados.
West Indies will play in Pool B in the preliminary round of the 11th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup. They will do battle alongside defending champions India, Ireland, Pakistan, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe.
Before the tournament West Indies will have warm-up matches against England and Scotland.
