The weather was excellent and so too were the underdogs as upsets held sway on the first day of competition in the Vitamalt/Aqua Mist sponsored West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Knockout Cup as Beavers FC and Wales FC registered qualification victories yesterday, at the Den Amstel ground.
In the feature game of the double header, Young Achievers suffered the humiliation of going down to Beavers FC 4-0, while Wales FC edged Bagotsville/Nismes 1-0.
Following their victories, they both have now entered the quarterfinal stage of the tournament.
In the feature clash, Beavers took the lead in the 39th minute through an own goal which came after a cross from the left side deflected off a defender, before settling in the back of the goal.
That scoreline remained until the break.
Eight minutes after the resumption, Beavers made it 2-0 when Martin Bobb netted a penalty, smashing a fierce right-footer into the lower left hand corner of the goal, following an awkward tackle inside the box.
Maxwell Trapp stretched their advantage further after 72 minutes, piercing the goalkeeper after finding himself unmarked in the penalty area.
Even though the win seemed virtually assured, Beavers were not done and Andrew St. Hill added another, bending his right footed freekick from just outside the 18-yard box into the lower right hand corner of the goal.
In the opening encounter, Wales FC through a magnificent header from Keton Boyce in the 32nd minute of play squuezed past Bagotsville/Nismes FC in a game that both teams failed to create many chances.
Prowling just outside the left upright, the lanky Boyce ascended high in the air to head past the goalkeeper just inside the near post.
Prior to the commencement of the tourney, a March Past featuring the participating teams was conducted, while the wife of the late Assistant Commissioner Derek Josiah met the teams before kick off.
Action is set to continue at the same venue with a planned double header on Friday December 12.
In the opening matchup at 18:00hrs, Pouderoyen FC will faceoff with Stewartville FC while Beavers FC and Slingerz FC will lock horns in the feature contest at 20:00hrs.
The winners will receive the championship trophy and $1million, while the second placed team pockets $500,000 and a trophy.
The third place finisher will collect $300,000, while the fourth placed side will take home $200,000 and a trophy.
