President Donald Ramotar on Saturday announced that the period of prorogation will not continue. He said that he is not willing to allow the National Assembly to get on with “business as usual.” At a press conference he hosted at State House, the President noted that instead of reconvening parliament and allow the debating of a No-Confidence Motion brought against him and his government, he will go to the polls next year.
The President said that he will announce a date for the elections early in the new year. He claimed that he chose not to announce it at that forum because he did not wish to spoil Christmas for Guyanese.
Minutes after the conclusion of the press conference, it became the hottest topic on social media. Many vented their feelings via this medium. Most of the commentary by citizens using the online media, revealed that they were not appeased by the President’s announcement.
Local writer Ruel Johnson on his Facebook page said, “So essentially Donald Ramotar announces that he will announce the way forward in January. In essence, nothing has changed – the dictatorship continues.”
Johnson added, “People of Guyana wake up. The President has further sunk Guyana into dictatorship and with inadequate reaction from civil society and the larger society. I find it absurd that as spurious a reason as not upsetting Christmas has been given for his failure to call a date for elections, and that the media did not press him for further clarification.
“We have a country that has failed to recognize the signs of dictatorship – the spending without scrutiny or regard for scrutiny, the refusal to hold elections, the state media under complete control of the PPP, the sharing out of the national airwaves, the sharing out of state resources and lands, and now an Amerindian teacher being slapped for daring to question the President.”
Even social activist, Mark Benschop lent his voice on the situation. He said, “Donald, what’s up bro? Guyanese thought you’d grow some b#*ls and announce a date for elections today, but you’ve proven to the entire nation that either you have one ball or no balls at all. Such a disgrace, gosh.”
Another user, Natasha Thomas, remarked, “Wooow, I really expected some form of serious announcement today from the President. He really had nothing to say. His actions will just make ppl more depressed for Christmas.”
Bibi Khan, in giving her take said, “Donald will announce a date to coincide the end of the 6-month period from when he unilaterally prorogue parliament by then he and his cabal of thieves will drain the coffers dry.”
Troy Williams, another Facebook user asserted, “ It sad to say, but Guyanese will just sit back and take this, Christmas will just go on as usual because we don’t demand the respect we deserve.”
