Elton Dharry has added another accolade to his collection after turning in a superb display in his fight against Nicaraguan, Jose Rios at the L B Scott Sports Auditorium Philipsburg Sint Maarten, Saturday evening last.
For his efforts, the famed ‘Coolie Bully’ carted off the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Inter Continental bantamweight title after scoring a unanimous points decision.
According to reports, Dharry enjoyed support from the Diaspora who cheered him on to victory. Reports are that both pugilists tipped the scales at an even 118 lbs but Dharry proved to be quicker than his opponent and carted off a lopsided victory. Judges, Waleska Roldan, Robin Taylor and Daniel Ottley all scored the bout 118-109 in favour of Dharry who now sports a 16-5-1 (10kos) record, while Rios dips to 12-1-1 (6 kos).
The bout was the main event of the “This is it war!” card promoted by Bobby Ottley of B.O.S.E. Promotions.
It hasn’t always been easy in the fight game for Dharry who had had several early losses. Born in Leguan, Guyana, he moved to America in 1999 and now resides in Brooklyn. He boxed in the U.S. Nationals and represented Guyana in the 2004 Olympic box offs.
Dharry started his professional career with two wins, against Mark Fernandes, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) and Sandy Childers, in the USA, but faltered somewhat in his next six fights, losing all but one. He has since picked up the pieces and last Saturday night’s victory has made it thirteen in a row.
