Guyana Police Force (GPF) FC and Alpha “the hammer” United started off their Georgetown
Football Association (GFA) fourth Banks Beer Cup in fine fashion on Friday night last at the Guyana Defence Force ground, Camp Ayanganna.
GPF FC overcame Northern Rangers 3-1, while Alpha United hammered Blackwater into submission 17-0. In the second game of a double header, Rawl Haynes put GPF FC in front in the second minute of the game when his free kick found the back of the net from the left side of the area. Haynes doubled the lead four minutes later, after being one on one with the goalkeeper he blasted his shot home from just inside the six- yard box.
Northern Rangers fought back well as they shared possession equally and made several attempts on goal. Shawn McCalman then pulled one back for them with a 35th minute strike from inside the 18-yard box as the teams went to the break at 2-1. Northern Rangers continued to press for an equalizer after the interval, but found it difficult to get past their opponents defence. In an attempt to extend the lead, GPF sent several shots wide, but Andy Gillis netted in the 86th minute to seal victory for his team.
In the opening fixture, Alpha proved too strong for their opponents. Dwain Jacobs fired home in the 6th, 28th, 56th, 58th, 60th and 83rd minutes, Daniel Wilson netted in the 18th, 22nd, 36th and 70th minutes, Jahaall Greaves scored in the 44th, 55th, 67th and 82nd minutes, Wayne Ellis found the back of the net in the 13th while Jacob Stephenson slotted home in the 75th and Jamal Codrington completed a horrible night for Blackwater with a 90th minute strike.
