Police have charged an East Canje goldsmith with the murder of 62-year-old businessman Terrence Malcolm McLean,
who was found, stabbed to death at his Lot 6, Sheet Anchor, East Canjie home last Wednesday.
Deon Sunthgolam, 38, a goldsmith of Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. According to Prosecutor Corporal Orin Joseph, the accused murdered McLean sometime between Monday, December 1, and Wednesday, December 3.
Sunthgolam was allegedly positively identified as the man who had visited the victim’s home.
But Sunthgolam’s Attorney, Charrandas Persaud, claimed that his client can barely read or write and was badly beaten to sign a statement.
Persaud stated that his client spoke to him before he went to the station after he learnt that he was being sought by the police. The Attorney said he gave his client instructions not to give any statement until he got there. However, Persaud said that he was unable to contact his client, because he was moved from one station to the next.
Attorney-at-Law Persaud said that he was surprised to meet his client in court yesterday. Magistrate Weaver granted the lawyer’s request for his client to be taken for medical attention.
Sunthgolam was remanded until Monday 8th December when the matter will be heard again in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court.
The accused has a stall in the New Amsterdam Market and has been a business associate of the victim for some time.
McLean, who imported fiber glass boats and engines, was reportedly last seen alive on Monday.
The victim’s son found the partly decomposed body at around 08:00 hrs on Wednesday, after repeated calls to his father went unanswered. The slain man’s .32 firearm and six live rounds were found in his bedroom. A substantial sum of cash was also reportedly in the house.
Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan gave the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to multiple stab wounds.
