After a somewhat lengthy period, boxing buffs in Berbice will have their appetites for a good

punch out whetted when several pugilists out of the Ancient County square off against their counterparts from Georgetown when Thom’s Promotions present ‘Rose Hall Town Showdown,’ 26 rounds of fistic fury at the Rose Hall Ground, Berbice, next Saturday.
Berbice pugilist, Richard Williamson, will tackle Dillon Allicock over 12 rounds for the local super/bantamweight title just after another Berbician, Dereck Richmond, steps up one division to square off with Romeo Norville over 6 rounds in a super/middleweight non title fight.
Indeed, the talent out of Berbice will be showcased when another hometown pugilist, Kishawn Simon, tackles Barbadian based Guyanese, former lightweight champion, Revlon Lake, in a highly anticipated 8 rounds slugfest.
The hard work by the organizers would have dwindled to naught had it not been for the support rendered by the corporate community. And so it was that the organizers were kept busy all through the day collecting much needed support.
Moments before leaving the Ancient County for engagements in Georgetown, Mr. Mark Thom travelled to Jeansville Hideout, Rose Hall Town where he received tangible support from the proprietor. Moments before arriving in Georgetown, Mr. Thom received added benevolence this time from Mohamed Construction of Lusignan ECD. The hard working promoter next visited Leisure Inn, Delph Street, Campbellville, and was blessed with another tangible donation towards the card’s success. The blessings continued to pour down and Mr. Thom received another support package from the proprietor of August Beverage, Norton Street, Georgetown. This organization has donated several hampers for lucky patrons who will be randomly selected after a draw of ticket stubs. The final contributor was Unicom Cement of Providence EBD who has donated the entire purse for one of the boxers.
“This is indeed a show of staunch corporate support and I am indeed grateful for it,” said Mr. Thom shortly after receiving the final contribution. He said expressed deep gratitude to his benefactors while disclosing that the Berbicians are excited since it has been quite a while that they have seen live boxing action.
The Ancient County has produced many top class pugilists the likes of the late Ramesh ‘Coolie Bully’ Best, Al Thomas, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman and Jeff Roberts among others. The sport has recently witnessed a revival with several gyms mushrooming around the region. These include the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym, Central Boxing Gym and the Rose Hall Jammers.
There has also been some emphasis on the amateur sector and several boxers have made their mark on the national scene, the likes of the Richard Williamsons and Jamal Eastman among others. Several of these boxers will be on show as the promoter compliment the card with several amateur bouts. These matches have not yet been made but the promoter has assured that the best will be selected as he will be collaborating with officials from the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA).
Other sponsors to date are Castle Hotel of Chapel Street, New Amsterdam and Maximum Sports, aired Fridays on NCN 11 from 21:00hrs. Admission to the venue is $2000 for the VIP section while general admission is $1000.
