A man who was indicted on two counts of rape walked out of the Berbice High Court a free man on Wednesday after the virtual complainant declined to give further evidence in the matter.
The accused, Suresh Chand -Latchman 47, of No 78 Village, Corentyne, appeared before Justice James Bovell Drakes in the Berbice High Court.
He was charged between the 1st and 8th May 2001, at Number 78 Village, Corriverton, with having carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 12 years old.
When the matter was called, the virtual complainant informed the court that she does not want to continue with the matter.
The virtual complainant, who is now a mother, indicated that she was frustrated and wanted to move on with her life.
Latchman had allegedly abused the girl when she was only 10 year old.
He allegedly ambushed her on her way home, took her to the back of the yard and raped her. The girl managed to escape and informed her relative.
The man was later arrested and charged.
