Last Saturday, Sachin Puri effortlessly launched the first serve of the 2014 Trophy Stall
Doubles Tennis Tournament at the National Racquet Centre amidst the threat of rain. At least 10 doubles partners braved the weather to come out to play their matches but action had to be cancelled for the entire day after an incessant heavy downpour.
Proprietor of the Trophy Stall, Ramesh Sunich sent his regrets for his absence at the Opening Ceremony but signalled his expectation for a successful tournament once again for the fifth straight year. The tournament caters to five categories of players, Men’s Open Doubles, Ladies Open Doubles, Mixed Open Doubles, Men’s Over 35 Doubles and Novice Medley Doubles. A total of 35 doubles teams registered.
Matches are to be played during the day on the three weekends of November 29th, December 6th and 13th at the National Racquet Centre, but evening play during the same period will be scheduled at the Le Ressouvenir Tennis Club during the week.
At the Opening Ceremony, the boys champion Gavin Lewis, who is the first junior to perform the duties of Tournament Coordinator, gave charge to the players to take the game seriously and to exercise good sportsmanship at all times especially during close line calls.
President of the Association Ms Grace McCalman in her remarks thanked the clubs for their renewed interest in developing their own tennis programmes and encouraged players to improve their game. In particular, the Non-Pariel Club was noted as one which maintains the largest number of novice players. She thanked CEO, ECI Engineering Services Ltd, Mr. Sam Barakat for providing the Le Ressouvenir Tennis Club facilities for night play, the absence of which, creates great difficulty in scheduling tournament matches for adults.
