General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Clement Rohee, yesterday said that the Party welcomes and commends the efforts of the General Registrar’s Office (GRO), to ensure that Amerindians get a chance to vote.
Rohee, who is also the Minister of Home Affairs and is as such responsible for the GRO, said that the entity is currently working in Amerindian communities, to ensure that they are equipped with birth certificates.
He said that the possession of a birth certificate allows every Guyanese the opportunity to be enfranchised and registered on the list of electors.
The politician noted that enfranchisement is a right. He said that it is one that the PPP has vehemently advocated for in an effort to ensure that all eligible Guyanese benefit from their constitutional right to vote.
As he continued singing praises to his Party, Rohee said that the PPP has fought for Amerindians to be allowed their right to be heard and will equally fight from them to vote.
Rohee said that history will show that the PPP has been relentless in its efforts to remove Amerindians from the category of second class citizens “when they were deliberately cast aside by the People’s National Congress (PNC) regime.”
He said that his Party therefore condemns calls by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), for the GRO not to proceed with its current endeavor to have Amerindian citizens equipped with birth certificates.
These calls, Rohee said, are “reminiscent of and in keeping with the history of the PNC which is to keep Amerindians marginalized.”
“During its tenure in office, the PNC sidelined Amerindians and shamelessly continues with this trend to this day,” uttered Rohee.
He said that all Guyanese, “especially Amerindians,” can rest assured that the PPP will “never sit by idly and allow the PNC, now APNU, to dehumanize and stigmatize any citizen. Amerindians must rest assured that the PPP will continue to work assiduously for their best interest.”
“In this regard, our Party supports the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) in ensuring the enfranchisement of every eligible citizen. The Party urges GECOM to step up its public relations efforts with regards to the commencement of seventh cycle of continuous registration.
In addition, our Party urges the relevant authority to be cognizant of the seemingly inflammatory sentiments being expressed by some within the Opposition aimed at intimidating Amerindians,” said Rohee.
