Magistrate Alex Moore replaced
Though the duration of his suspension is uncertain, a check at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court
Magistrate Alex Moore
yesterday revealed that the responsibilities of controversial Magistrate, Alex Moore, had been transferred to Magistrate Sueanna Lovell.
Magistrate Lovell normally presides over the Mahaica and Mahaicony Magistrates’ Courts. Sparendaam has been added to her plate since Moore, who had been sitting there, was suspended by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Lovell yesterday continued with Moore’s quota of work and has set dates for the continuation of matters. She also heard new cases. Moore’s workload will be shared by Magistrate Zamina Alli, who is assigned to Cove ‘n John and Vigilance Magistrates’ Courts.
Yesterday, the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) said that it is concerned about the impropriety perpetrated against businesswoman Seerojanie Singh, allegedly by Magistrate Moore during the hearing of a case on November 12, last, at the Sparendaam Court.
Singh, who resides and operates her business at Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara, told Kaieteur News that she appeared before Moore after being cross charged with a man for using abusive language.
The woman explained that the case against her was dismissed and as the matter against the man continued to be heard, the Magistrate, with the file before him, confronted her about each of the alleged abusive words which stemmed from the encounter.
She explained that he questioned both the defendants about the documented profanities and degrading demand for sexual favours.
The IAC, in response, has condemned “the acts allegedly perpetrated by those who are supposed to protect against such actions. It becomes worrisome when those tasked with such responsibility would allegedly indulge in such inhumane behaviour.”
This, the IAC opined, can only lead to an intensification of the erosion of trust in some who are so charged with the responsibility to protect and serve.
Such an act, the committee said, must not be allowed to go unnoticed. The organisation has therefore called on the relevant authorities to leave no stone unturned in determining the truth. More so, the IAC urged swift and thorough investigations into this horrific incident.
The IAC said it remains adamant that the right to due process by every citizen must be observed by those entrusted with such responsibility and issued a call on civil society to emphasise same.
By way of complaint, the businesswoman approached the Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, and wrote to the Chancellor of the Judiciary as well as to Ombudsman, Justice Winston Moore.
The JSC suspended the Magistrate, to investigate allegations of inappropriate behaviour made by the East Coast Demerara businesswoman. He will be afforded a hearing with the JSC.
The decision to suspend him was taken last Friday and took immediate effect.
